Assignment #4: Do you believe in Ghosts?

“In Hamlet, the opening scene relates the superstitious beliefs of the watchmen concerning ghosts. They think the ghost disappears before the sun rises because he is not allowed to leave his grave during the day. They think he will not speak unless first spoken to. They believe his appearance bodes some ill fortune about to come down upon Denmark.”

These ideas portrayed in Hamlet and are even in use today are called superstitions. Superstitions can be seen as another human emotion used to either stir fear or make fear go away. Some superstitions of elizabethan times would be that ghosts would wear armor, representing antiquity of past peoples.

A lot of superstitions of today are that houses are haunted and some woods and forests are haunted.

As you can see in the vid, this movie was a “Mock”umentery about 3 teens who went in search of the ghost of a witch. They find themselves in the Black Hills forest of Maryland.

People’s fascination with ghosts today are a basic need for entertainment. We tell these stories weather true or not for the entertainment of ourselves and we all love seeing and hearing these stories.

August 20, 2009: The Canterbury Tales

If you have recieved your High School Diploma then most likely you have heard of The Canterbury Tales by Geoffrey Chaucer. If you are unfamilliar with this story or you just didn’t pay attention in class then you must know that The Canterbury Tales takes you on a holy pilgramage to Canterbury Cathedral. I am here to answer a few questions about the curious characters in this collection of stories.

Which one you would most like to travel with on a pilgrimage. Why?

Of all the characters in the Canterbury Tales I believe the most enjoyable person to travel on a great religous pilgramage would have to be the Oxford Cleric. Being the most humble and “down to Earth” character in Chaucer’s story appeals to me as a companion on a great religous journey. Though I am not very religous if I ever did find myself truly needing forgiveness through a manner of traveling a great distance to a “holy land” I would seek it with the Oxford Cleric.

Then, decide which character would be most difficult to tolerate on a long road trip. Why?

Something about a hypocrite just does not sound very deserving of forgiveness. The Friar claims himself a holy man and shows his holyness by cavorting around and continuously begging for money while at the same time taking a pinsion for himself. I could not put up with such a man of dishonesty.

How would your personality and the personalities of these characters compare?

I see myself connecting with the Oxford Cleric the most. Being somewhat quiet and a tad bit too concealed I can relate to his personality. For the Friar we are so different would probably clash alot in our opinions on how he should be portraying a man of god.

The amazing Lyre Bird is an ancient Australian bird that mimics other species calls as it’s own mating calls.

As you can see, it’s astonishing ability to mimic sounds is a strange form of evolution that has affected these birds. I find it very curious that an animal needs to copy another species to mate with their own species. Some effects on these birds and the natural world that was caused by growing civilization would be the other more humanistic sounds the birds make. Sounds such as car alarms, man-made instruments, and the human voice are just a few examples.

Ads about body language are meant to do one thing and one thing only. Promote a product. Whether you are promoting a health food or diet pill or a brand of lowfat tuna it’s all an ad to sell a product. It just so happens that people want these products to imitate and emulate so called perfect bodies. Make up to cover up acne, diet pills to lose weight. It all coresponds with the idea that being “healthy” can make you attractive. Which is partially true but some don’t take the “healthy” route. Anarexia and Bulemia are two very serious diseases across the US and are not healthy one bit. The reason these disorders are so vast is because teenagers idealize these models/celebrities and want to look like them.

Using a blog for expressing my feelings as an assignment sounds like a fun activity when I’m really bored, frustrated or if none of my friends are on Facebook. Have I ever made a blog for an assignment? hmmm no. I predict this assignment will end in turmoil and destruction of all living things…… what? I am definitely not looking forward to the turmoil and destruction.
